A Taste Of The Pricey, And Not So Pricey, Wines
23+ hour, 21+ min ago (808+ words) By Tom Marquardt And Patrick Darr A wine columnist recently named 15 Napa Valley Cabernets as the "finest examples" available. Undoubtedly, they're heavyweights among elite producers, but they also top the "least affordable" list. Celebrated for their depth and aging potential, the roster includes Screaming Eagle ($2,474), Harlan Estate ($1,497), Opus One ($462) and Caymus Special Selection ($235). Even Robert Mondavi To Kalon feels like a bargain at $189. We remember buying Opus One at its $50 launch price in 1980, already the most expensive Napa bottle on the market. Other wineries soon realized consumers would pay premium prices simply to own something their friends couldn't. No wonder the average Napa cabernet now sells for about $108. Those "high'end" bottles we paid $25 for in the 1980s now fetch ten times as much. Are these wines worth it? Collectors say yes'and in some cases we agree'but pulling the cork on a…...
Cheese was linked to lower dementia risk in a new study but there's a catch
23+ hour, 21+ min ago (808+ words) People who regularly ate cheese were at a modestly lower risk of developing dementia in a new observational study from Japan. The reduction in risk was not large but was statistically significant, according to the researchers, thus underscoring the potential effect of diet on long-term cognitive health. Among the 7,914 people involved in the study, just 134 people who self-reported eating cheese developed symptoms of dementia after 3 years, compared to 176 people who said they were not regular cheese-eaters. People who ate cheese were thus less likely to develop dementia by 1.06 percentage points. The authors of the study note that this reduction in risk is consistent with other research suggesting dairy products may have neuroprotective value. The study is published in the journal Nutrients, and it was funded by the Meiji group, a Japanese company that sells, among other items, dairy products, including…...
